The City of Huron Building Department is certified by the Ohio Department of Commerce Board of Building Standards to enforce the Ohio Basic Building Code within our jurisdictional boundaries.

  • All commercial/industrial/residential projects fall under the authority of the Building Department.
  • The Ohio Building Code (OBC) and the National Electric Code (NEC) are used for all commercial/industrial work. 
  • The Ohio Residential Code for One, Two, and Three Family Dwelling Code, the National Electric Code (NEC), and the Ohio Plumbing Code (OPC) are used for residential construction in the City.
  • All personnel employed by the Building Department are certified by the State of Ohio and/or other national code organizations.

Board of Building and Zoning Appeals 

The Board of Building and Zoning Appeals meets on the 2nd Monday of every month, 6:30P.M. at the City of Huron, 417 Main Street, City Council Chambers.  The Zoning Appeal Board is composed of five members from the community. When a zoning or building proposal presents an exception to an existing code, a property owner may seek a variance form the Board of Zoning and Appeals.  Contact the City Manager's Office for meeting information and application process.

Planning Commission

The Planning Commission meets the 4th Wednesday of every month, 5:30p.m.  at the City of Huron, 417 Main Street, City Council Chambers.  The Commission is composed of citizens, appointed by Council, and is empowered by the City Charter and the Ohio Revised Code. It reviews requests from developers and makes recommendations to the City Council based on the location, character, and extent of the proposal. The Commission also reviews all lot splits. The Planning Commission advises the City Council on zoning map and text amendments and is responsible for the Long Range Plan. COMPLETE APPLICATION PACKET(S) THE REQUIRED FEES MUST BE RECIEVED 10 DAYS PRIOR TO A REGULAR PLANNING COMMISSION MEETING DATE IN ORDER TO BE INCLUDED ON THE AGENDA FOR CONSIDERATIONContact the City Manager's Office for meeting and process information.

Design Review Sub-Committee

The Design Review Sub-Committee works under the direction of the Planning Commission and meets the first Thursday of the month at 8:00 a.m. at the City of Huron Conference Room (417 Main Street). Contact the City Manager's Office for meeting information.
