Article II of the Huron City Charter establishes the City Council, number of members, selection process and term. The City Council consists of seven members, including the mayor, elected at large in the City, for four year overlapping terms. Any registered elector who has lived in the City for two years prior to filing a petition of candidacy, may serve as a member of City Council, if elected. Among other powers, the Council shall have authority to:
- Adopt ordinances and resolutions on any subject within the scope of its powers, and to provide penalties for the violation thereof;
- Establish the internal organization and staffing of the departments, boards and commissions created by the charter; set up additional departments, boards or commissions as it may deem necessary and determine their powers and duties;
- Adopt an annual appropriation ordinance based on the annual budget, and delegate its enforcement to the City Manager.

Would you like to serve on a board or commission?
The Mayor is responsible for appointing City of Huron residents to the various boards and commissions that report to the City Council. Many residents have volunteered to serve their community by taking a seat on the Personnel Appeals Board, Planning Commission, Huron Joint Recreation District, and many others. If you are interested in learning more about how you can serve in one of these very important capacities, please contact Mayor Shearer via Clerk of Council at (419) 433-5000
